How we research prices

Anyone can publish a number. This page explains where ours come from, so you can check them yourself.

Every figure has a source

Each guide ends with a list of the sources behind its numbers, linked so you can open them. If a figure has no published source we can point to, we do not publish the figure — we describe the range in words instead. Our figures come from rate studies that publish their own method — Bankrate, ValuePenguin, Insurify, The Zebra, MoneyGeek — and from state insurance departments when the question is about the law rather than the price.

Ranges, not promises

Prices are published as ranges because that is how they behave in the real world: the same driver is priced differently in different states, by different insurers, with different records behind them. A single number would be easier to read and less honest.

What we do not do

We do not sell insurance, we are not an agency or a broker, and we do not run quote forms. We do not collect quotes on your behalf, and we do not accept payment to feature a company in an article. Our pages carry sponsored search results supplied by third-party advertising partners; the disclosure at the top of every guide says so, and we do not choose which advertisers appear.

The estimator on our guides

Some guides carry a small estimator: you answer two or three questions and it narrows the published range. The starting range comes from the sources listed on that page. The adjustments — older system, after-hours call, higher deductible — are our editorial judgement about how much those things usually move a bill, not published figures, and we say so under every result. It is an illustration to argue with, not a quote to rely on.

Updates and corrections

We revisit a guide when its underlying sources change, and the date at the top of the page moves with it. Found something wrong? Write to contact@ratewatchdaily.net and name the page — corrections are made on the page itself.
